Jones v. Alfred H. Mayer Co., 1968

Significance: This case was not filed under the Fair Housing Act but under 42 U.S.C. § 1982, which was part of the Civil Rights Act of 1866. This statute was intended to prohibit all race and color discrimination in the sale and rental of property, including governmental and private discrimination. 

????  This case removed all exceptions to fair housing.

???? Persons suing under the 1866 Act are entitled to recover actual and punitive damages, and their attorneys’ fees and costs.
